In order to find ways to engage and retain learners, it is important to understand the different categories of people who have signed up for our MOOC.  In this video, we identify three categories of registered participants, and discuss the different approaches to retention needed for each of these groups. We also talk about the pattern of active, engaged students, which can be represented by a curve which tends to reach a peak after the first week, but sharply decreases thereafter, becoming almost flat during the last modules. Understanding the three types of participants, and this curve allows us to optimize low-cost, high-yield resources and activities.
